Mrs. Strickland was born January 17, 1921 in Marion County, Alabama to the late William Joseph and Nancy Ellen Nichols. She was a Homemaker and the widow of the late J.C. Strickland. Mrs. Strickland had unshakeable faith in Christ and went to join her husband of sixty years, J. C. (Chet) Strickland. Mrs. Strickland's career was Homemaking. She insisted her daughters learn to practice homemaking as an art. She was a graduate of Hackleburg High School.

She is survived by daughters, Nancy Hawkins, Bethesda, Maryland, and Deborah Davis, Troy, Alabama; and a grandson, Zachary Hawkins.

McCrimon, Betty Ann Blaylock - Age 69 - Columbus, MS
(June 11, 1938 - June 8, 2008)

Ms. Betty Ann Blaylock McCrimon, age 69, of Columbus, MS, passed away Sunday June 8, 2008 from the Windsor Place in Columbus, MS.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 10, 2008 at 7:00 P.M. from the Otts Funeral Home Chapel. Ms. McCrimon will be cremated after the service and interment will be at Macedonia Cemetery at a later date. Visitation will be held on Tuesday evening from 5:00 until service time at 7:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the American Heart Association, St. Jude Childrens Hospital or the National Kidney Foundation.

Ms. McCrimon was born on June 11, 1938 in Lamar County, AL to the late Esker Lee and Estus Pennington Blaylock. She was of the Baptist faith, a member of the Artesia Baptist Church in Artesia, MS and attended Academy Baptist Church. Ms. McCrimon was a graduate of Millport High School. She had lived in Tupelo for a number of years and had formerly worked at Westwood Furniture in Tupelo. Ms. McCrimon liked to do needlepoint, playing bingo at Windsor Place and spending time with her family.

Survivors include 1 Son: Curtis Eugene “Gene” (Rebecca) Corbell, Jr., Sulligent, AL 1 Daughter: Mary Jane (Robert) Wyers, Columbus, MS 4 Grandchildren: Michael (Tiffany) Wyers, Penny Wyers, Matthew Corbell, Rachel Corbell 3 Great Grandchildren: Hayden Wyers, Baylee Wyers, Ethan Wyers 2 Brothers: Donald Blaylock, Kennedy, AL Jimmy Blaylock, Sulligent, AL Special Friends: Dorothy Johnson, Sandra Lewis, Janice Dyer

She was preceded in death by her parents, Esker Lee and Estus Pennington Blaylock; her husband, Curtis Corbell Sr.; and four brothers, Raymond Blaylock, Arie Blaylock, Roy Blaylock and Billy Blaylock.

Thomas Perry Cross, age 78, of Hubbertville, died Friday, June 6, 2008 at Northwest Medical Center in Winfield.

Mr. Cross is survived by his wife, Barbara Sims Cross; three sons, John Thomas Cross of Plainfield, IL, George William (Norma) Cross of Pensacola, FL, and David Leon (Linda) Cross of Joliet, IL; one daughter, Paula (Roy) Fowler of Winfield; two sisters, Myra Wells and Ruby Roberts, both of Jasper; six grandchildren, Sarah Mackum, Jerry (Lynsy) Mackum, Kerri Jo Cross, Amanda Cross, Adam Cross, and Cody Cross; three great grandchildren, Marcus Henry, Emma Gracie Mackum, and Nathan Cross; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 11, 2008 at 2:00 PM from the Miles Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in New River Church of Christ Cemetery with Tuscon Stovall, Mark Maddox, and Edward Wyers officiating. The family will receive friends Tuesday night at the funeral home from 6:00 until 8:00 PM. Mr. Cross was born December 26, 1929 in Valdosta, GA, to the late John Thomas Cross and Bessie Ozella Swindle Cross. Formerly a resident of Jasper, he had been a resident of Hubbertville and Guin the past several years. He was a retired US Navy veteran serving in the Korean and Vietnam era conflicts. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, John Thomas Cross, Jr.; and two sisters, Juanita Bozeman and Melissa Holbrook.

Watkins, Robert Marshall - Age 72 - Winfield, AL

Robert Marshall Watkins, age 72 of Winfield (Bobo Community in Fayette County), passed away Friday, June 6, 2008 at his residence, after an extended battle with cancer.

Mr. Watkins was born October 10, 1935 to the late Oscar and Alice Nell (Hamm) Watkins. Marshall lived most of his life in Winfield, having graduated from WCHS in 1954. He was very active in his church, Winfield First Baptist, where he served as deacon and was treasurer for over 30 years. He also served on the Building Feasibility Committee for the new sanctuary that is currently under construction.

Mr. Watkins is survived by his wife, Gay Webster Watkins; a son, Mike (Dawn) Watkins of Winfield; three daughters, Jan (Wesley) McNeill, Joan Watkins, and Jill (Bob) Hawkins, all of Winfield; five grandchildren, Landon McNeill, of Northport, Laremy (Ashley) McNeill, of Hamilton, Laurel McNeill, Chandler Hawkins, and Connor Hawkins, of Winfield,; one great grandchild, Ian Reed McNeill; three sisters, Ruby Nell Brock of Helena, Frankie (Richard) Shaffer of Livingston, TN, and Judy (Larry) Hunter of Winfield; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Funeral services were held Sunday, June 8, 2008 at 2:00 PM from the Winfield First Baptist Church. Burial followed in the Winfield City Cemetery with Dr. Charles Ballew and Rev. Don Graham officiating. Music for the service was shared by organist, Roberta Thomas and soloist, Scott Duckworth. Serving as pallbearers were: Ken Hunter, Kevin Hunter, Chad Holbrooks, Lance Shaffer, John Shaffer, Phillip Carroll, Clark Miles, Earl Ray Norris, Edwin Norris, Frank Smith, Ted Smith, and Terry Jones. Honorary Pallbearers were the Adult 3 Men’s Sunday School Class and fellow Deacons of Winfield First Baptist Church.

Born March 13, 1922 in Marion County, AL. to the late Charlie Gilbert and Cordie Mae Patterson Howell. She married A.C. Whitworth on December 7, 1946. He preceded her in death.

She was also preceded in death by five brothers, Lelton, Virgil, Hasten, Lester and Linzie.

Mrs. Whitworth was a homemaker and enjoyed cooking and gardening.

Mr. Albert Eldon Wheeler, age 87, of Vernon, AL passed away Monday June 9, 2008 at the residence.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 12, 2008 at 1:00 P.M. from the Otts Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in the Shiloh-Pinhook Cemetery. Officiating ministers will be Bro. Harmony Freewill Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during WWII. Mr. Wheeler had previously worked at Vernon Mfg., NACCO and Heavy’s Oil Field Service. He was a member of the American Legion and enjoyed wood-working, gardening and cooking.

Joseph D. Hennessy., age 76 of Vestavia Hills, Alabama passed away on June 10, 2008.

Joe was a loving father and grandfather. He was born in Haleyville, Alabama, he was a graduate of Phillips High School and later graduated Auburn University in Civil Engineering, where he ran track. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, he worked for 24 years for Rust Engineering and was the City Engineer for the City of Bessemer. He was a little league football coach for Hoover and Vestavia Hills.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gracie and Joseph Hennessy; daughter, Grace Carr.

He is survived by his wife, Fanelle Barnes Hennessy; son, Drew Hennessy and his wife Kathleen; son-in-law, Robert A. Carr; grandchildren, Cameron Carr, Ginger Carr, Melissa Hennessy and Breck Hennessy.

Visitation will be Sunday, June 15, 2008 from 5 PM until 6 PM at Southern Heritage Funeral Home. The funeral will be Monday, June 16, 2008 at 11 AM at 2nd Presbyterian Church in Homewood. Interment will follow in Elmwood Cemetery.

Fred Brown, age 69, died Monday, June 9, 2008, at the Helen Keller Hospital.

He was born Dec. 27, 1938, in Hazard, Ky., to Reuben Brown and Hallie Collette. He was an employee of the State Highway Department for 27 years and a member of New Union Missionary Baptist Church.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 11, 2008, at New Union Missionary Baptist Church with Bro. Robert Issacs and Bro. Greg Philamlee officiating. The body will lie in state from 10 a.m. to service time Wednesday at the church. Burial will follow in Halltown Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, June 10, 2008, at the funeral home.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Louise Brown of Vina, Ala.; one son, Billy Brown (Jackie) of Red Bay, Ala.; one brother, Corbett Brown of Kenosha, Wis.; two grandsons, Kyle Brown and Austin Brown, both of Red Bay; a host of nieces and nephews.

Mary Tucker Hawley, age 75 of Winfield, died Sunday, June 8, 2008 at Shepherd’s Cove Hospice in Albertville, AL.

Mrs. Hawley was born September 7, 1932 in Marion County to the late J. Floyd and Ethel L. Alvis Tucker. She was a member of Central Church of Christ and owned M&E Beauty Shop near Winfield. She loved spending time with (and cooking for) her family and working in her garden.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by six brothers, Pomp, Gyp, Bill, Joe, Jerry, and Jack Tucker; and four sisters, Sis Wilcutt, Audrey Wilson, Edra Townley, and Estelle Tucker.

She is survived by her husband, Darrell Hawley; two daughters, Kim (Guy) Kirk of Albertville and Janice (Jerry) Foley of Vance; four grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Kennedy, Lela Estelle Hughes - Age 88 - Shottsville, AL

SHOTTSVILLE, Ala. - Lela Estelle Hughes Kennedy passed away Thursday, June 19, 2008, at the Red Bay, Ala., Hospital. She was born December 13, 1921, to Marvin and Fetney Anna Hughes on the family farm near Bexar, Alabama. She never lost her love of the soil or her enthusiasm for planting and watching things grow. Growing up on a farm she learned the value of hard work and importance of friends and family.

On Aug. 20, 1944, she married Veto Lee Kennedy of Shottsville. While he served in World War II, she joined the church he had attended all his life, Shottsville United Methodist Church. She spent 64 years working tirelessly in the church she loved. She was a founding member of Shottsville Church's Women's Society of Christian Service, later to be called the United Methodist Women. She served many times as a local and district officer. She also taught the young people's Sunday School class for many years and served as counselor for the Methodist Youth Fellowship. She directed the first Christmas pageant the church presented in 1954, a tradition she continued for the next 15 years before "passing the torch." She sang in the church choir until she was 85.

Her deep and abiding faith was evident to all who knew her because she truly believed that we show our love for Christ more by how we live than by what we say. Her life is her testimony.

She was a homemaker and mother and loved working in her home, in her garden and in the fields. She worked only short periods of time through her working years both at Munsingwear Inc., and Itawamba Manufacturing.

Services will be at 11 a.m. today, June 21, at the Shottsville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Carl R. Long, the Rev. Steve Lawley, the Rev. Mac Buttram and the Rev. David Parker officiating. Burial will follow in the Shottsville Cemetery. Deaton Funeral Home of Red Bay is in charge of the arrangements.

She is survived by a daughter, LaVale Mills and her husband, Ruble, of Shottsville, Ala.; two granddaughters, Michelle Lee Mills of Hamilton, Ala., and Dawn Wilemon and her husband, Matthew, of Red Bay, Ala.; two great-grandchildren, Anna Caroline Wilemon and Kennedy Lee Wilemon, both of Red Bay, Ala.; one brother, Jimmy D. Hughes and his wife, Shirley Ann, of Hamilton, Ala.; one nephew, Vincent Hughes and his wife, Marisa, of Haleyville, Ala.; a great-niece, Sarah Hughes of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; two great-nephews, John Hughes and Walker Hughes, both of Haleyville, Ala.; and a host of other family and friends.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Lee Crews; a nephew, James Lee Crews; and a number of other loved ones and special friends.

Pallbearers will be Norman Emerson, Douglas Emerson, Don Betts, Mike Shotts, Don Shotts and Mark Loden. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Raynard Fabianke, Billy Loden, Gene Kennedy, Gerald Betts, Richard Betts, Boyd Grimes, Hobert Shotts, Billy Bolton and Brad Bolton.

Ms. Cagle was born on February 9, 1939 in a daughter of Olan Chester Berryhill and Hattie Mae Tidwell Berryhill; resident of the Guin area most of her life; previously sat with the elderly; and was a member of First Free Will Baptist Church at Guin.

In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by an infant son and one brother, Roger Berryhill.

Mr. Real was born February 7, 1949 in Montgomery County, AL to the late Leeburn and Bernice Dillard Real. He was a 1967 graduate of Sulligent High School. Mr. Real retired as a Major from the Alabama Army National Guard ( 877th Engineering Battalion) and was a former Company Commander for Guin and Vernon. He also graduated with an EDS in Educational Administration and a Masters Degree in Mental Health, School Counseling, Social Science and School Administration. Mr. Real was the 2008 Cambridge University Educator of the Year. He was also an Education Coordinator at Safetynet Academy in Minter, AL.

He is survived by his wife: Linda Real, Detroit, AL; Daughters: Renee (Barry) Triplett, Nesbit, MS, Lanice (Will) White, Detroit, AL; Grandchildren: Laura Triplett, Amie Triplett & Michael White

He was preceded in death by his parents: Leeburn and Bernice Real; and Son: Tyler Real.

Born in Fayette County, Alabama. She is the Daughter of the late Curtis Harris and Mary Lessie May Mobley. She had lived in Guin most of her life, was a member of the Guin First Baptist Church and had worked for Munsingwear for 28 years before retiring.

Rabon Haskel Westbrook, age 91, of Decatur, Alabama, went to be with our Lord on June 24, 2008.

He was a resident of Morningside Assisted Living and a member of First Church of the Nazarene in Birmingham, AL. In 2001, he relocated to Decatur from Birmingham where he had lived for 51 years. While living in Decatur, he was a very faithful worshipper at Central Baptist Church.

He retired from Hayes Aircraft Corporation of Birmingham as an aircraft radio technician. After retirement, he devoted his time to growing flowers and gardening.

Riggs, Louise Tucker - Age 70 - Hamilton, AL

Louise T. Riggs, age 70, Hamilton, AL., passed away Thursday, June 12, 2008, at her residence.

She was born July 16, 1937, to the late Cecil and Lucille Tucker.

She graduated from Hubbertville High School and from Druid City Hospital School of Nursing in 1958. She obtained a bachelors of science degree in education from Athens University and later completed masters coursework in education and obtained a bachelors of science in nursing degree from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.

During her 50-year career, she worked as a registered nurse and supervisor with Listerhill Hospital, Druid City Hospital, and Methodist Hospital. She was later employed as a nursing instructor with Northwest Alabama Technical State College in Hamilton. She retired from the Alabama Department of Public Health as a Medicaid waiver coordinator. Her interests included gardening, traveling, photography and spending time with her friends and family. She was a faithful member of over 50 years to the Hamilton Church of Christ.

She had worked as a manager of Jr. Food Mart in Guin for eleven years. She was also a dietician at the nursing home in Winfield. She was a member of New Bethel Freewill Baptist Church.

She is survived by two sons, Edward Lee Mauldin of Winfield and Thomas Dewayne Mauldin of Hackleburg; two daughters, Delesa Dianne Peters of Hackleburg and Brenda Lee Long of Brilliant; eleven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; two brothers, Buck Cook of Lynn and Talmadge Cook of Hackleburg. , AL.

Benny L. Luningham, 59, of Pottsville, Arkansas, died Monday, June 23, 2008, in Hamilton, Alabama as the result of a one-vehicle truck accident.

Born Jan. 4, 1949, in Russellville, Arkansas, he was the son of the late Melphy and Fredie Duvall Luningham.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Christie Luningham, and three sisters, Bonnie Luningham, Helen Tramell and Frances Race. He was a truck driver for River Valley Express and was a Free Will Baptist.

Survivors include his wife, Peggy Vickers Luningham of Pottsville, Arkansas; two sons and daughters-in-law, Kevin and Dana Luningham of Paris and Scott and Lindsay Luningham of Pottsville, Arkansas; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Fred Albert Luningham of Russellville and Ellis and Linda Luningham of Pottsville, Arkansas; one sister, Newana Duvall of Russellville; and three grandchildren, Dylan, Chloe and Ashton.

Mrs. Clorine Brown Davidson, age 73 of Winfield, passed away Thursday, June 26, 2008 in the St. Vincent’s Hospital at Birmingham.

A memorial service was held Sunday, June 30, 2008 at 3:00 PM from the Cornerstone Baptist Church.

Mrs. Davidson was born on August 8, 1934 in Pickens Co. a daughter of Walter Oscar and Annie Junkin Brown; resident of Birmingham most of her life; resident of Winfield for past year; widow of Robert C. Davidson, Sr.; and a member of Crestway Baptist Church in Birmingham.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Edward and Johnny Burt Brown.

Survivors include one daughter, Tonya (Ronnie) Elmore of Winfield; one son, Raymond Harbarger of Winfield; one step-son, Robert C. Davidson, Jr. of Georgia; four grandchildren, Jared (Kelsey) Elmore, Casey Elmore, Glenn and Helen Harbarger; two sisters, Clara Fair and Betty Branyon, both of Gordo; four brothers, Rev. Garnett (Edna Earl) Brown and Stillman (Ruth) Brown, both of Gordo, Bobby (Jackie) Brown of Opelika and Jerry (Tracy) Brown of Greensboro; special friend, Dr. Richard Berryman; nieces, nephews and other relatives.

May, Lex Noel - Age 67 - Winfield, AL

Lex Noel May, age 67 of Winfield, AL, died Sunday, June 29, 2008 at his residence.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 2, 2008 at 2:00 PM from the McGraw Memorial Chapel of Miles Funeral Home. Burial followed in Siloam Cemetery with E. J. Lowery officiating. Serving as pallbearers were: Tommy Taylor, Robert Cain, Roger Cain, Steve Cain, Anthony Lann, and T. J. Lann.

Mr. May was born January 16, 1941 in Lamar County to the late Roman Goodwin May and Mae Ethel Spann May. A graduate of Winfield High School, he was a resident of the Siloam Community for the last several years. He retired from the US Coast Guard as Chief Engineering Officer with twenty years of service. He was Chief Engineer for Hannah Marine in Chicago for several years; and his church affiliation was Baptist.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Lita Faye Humbers and a brother, J. W. May.

He is survived by his wife, Delana Marie Cain May; two sons, Darryl (Jennie) May of Phil Campbell and Danny (Annie) May of Sutton Bay, MI; three daughters, Christy (Anthony) Lann, Cassie (T.J.) Lann, and Carrie (Tim) Wilson, all of Smithville, MS; twelve grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Real, John Henry - Age 88 - Detroit, AL

John Henry Real, age 88, of Detroit, AL., passed away on June 29, 2008 at North Mississippi Medical Center in Hamilton, Alabama.

He was born on May 8, 1920 to Muraw H. Real and Melverdia Ballard Real in Marion County, AL. He was a rural mail carrier, a farmer, and a retired school teacher. He was an Air Force (Disabled) Veteran of WWII. Mr. Real was a graduate of Auburn University with a B.S. Degree in Agricultural, Masters Degree in Vocational Agricultural, a Graduate Degree from the University of Alabama, and most recent Degree in Master Gardening. He was very active in Kingsville Church of Christ where he has served as an Elder for many years. Mr. Real was instrumental in the developing of Maywood Christian Camp. He enjoyed, very much, working in his yard and gardening.

He is preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Annie Lee Lawler; 2 brothers, J.M. Real and Leburn Real.

He is survived by his wife, Anita Real of Detroit, AL; daughter, Melisa (Steve) Ray of Tuscaloosa, AL; son, Dr. Tim (Pam) Real of Birmingham, AL; 3 grandchildren, Alex Ray, Hudson and Bailey Real; 2 step-grandchildren, Kelsey and Michael Ray; sister, Nellie Mae Lindsey of Detroit, AL; and brother, D.D. Real of Detroit, AL.

Visitation was held on Monday, June 30, 2008 at Kingsville Church of Christ. Funeral Services were held on Tuesday, July 1, 2008 at the church with burial in Kingsville Cemetery. Jimmy Brumley, David Brumley and Dave Brumley officiated.

Mr. Courington was born November 29, 1928, in Lynn, Alabama, to Thomas Felix and Alison H. Oliver Courington. He married Lois M. Pope on July 5, 1947, in Corinth, Mississippi. Olen was a member of Faith Baptist Church. He worked at Stevenson Lumber Company as a truck driver until he retired in 1987. Olen enjoyed repairing small engines and he was a driver for the Meals on Wheels program.

Born August 14, 1924, in Marion County, she was the daughter of the late Luther and Mary Emaline Howell Clay. She was a homemaker. She loved working in her garden and was a member of the Brooks Garden Club. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Killen.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Presley Cox; sister, Lillie Mae Clark; and brothers, Alvin and Rufus Clay.

Ron was a member of the Eastside Baptist Church of Russellville. He was the previous owner of the radio stations, WKAX and WGOL in Russellville.
